Basic insurance to consider

It is important to know the particularities and differences of the basic insurance of Germany compared to France. Depending on your personal needs and those of your family, we can also advise you on which covers are essential, recommended or to be avoided, as the case may be.

  • Health insurance (Krankenversicherung)
  • Liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung)
  • Personal Property Insurance (Hausratversicherung)
  • Motor insurance (Kfz-Versicherung)
  • Disability insurance (Berufsunfähigkeitsversicherung)
  • Life insurance (Risiko-Lebensversicherung)
  • And many others

Health insurance in Germany

The health insurance system in Germany (Krankenversicherung) is based on two types of funds: private and public. The choice is to be taken seriously because it is often a decision for life, in that it can be difficult to come back to the public after being insured in private.

Private fund / Private Krankenversicherung (PKV)

This fund is reserved for workers who have a gross salary higher than the Jahresarbeitsentgeltgrenze (JAEG) which is € 60,750 in 2019. However, the self-employed, freelancer and civil servants can also subscribe to this fund regardless of their annual income. In addition to being guaranteed for life, the benefits, treatments and products reimbursed are much more numerous, varied and adapted to the needs of the insured than those of a public fund.

Public fund / Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung (GKV)

Employees with a gross income of less than € 60,750 (2019 limit) must subscribe to the public fund. Fortunately, the amount of the contribution is calculated based on income. The less you earn, the less you pay. In addition, unemployed spouses and children are insured free of charge. However, the benefits offered are not guaranteed because governments can modify or reduce them.

It may be wise to consider the relevance of complementary health according to personal needs. Such insurances can, for example, pay for a single room in the hospital, dentures or glasses.

Preparing for your retirement in Germany

The German pension system can become complex for those who wish to maintain a standard of living similar to that which they had during their working life. Considering that a person needs 80% of his last net salary every month to live by the same standards, it is clear that the public pension system is not enough. There are, however, several ways to make up for this shortfall, for example:

The basic cover

  • Complementary fund specific to a trade
  • Basis Annuity

Complementary retirement

  • Riester pension / Riester-Rente
  • Savings through the company (betriebliche Altersversorgung)

Investments

  • Funds
  • Stocks
  • Real Estate
